How to View and Edit a Photo on a Mac (The Easy Way for Beginners)

“I Just Want to Crop It. Why Is This So Complicated?”

If you’ve ever opened a photo on your Mac and found yourself staring blankly at buttons, sliders, or (worse) options in grey you can’t click—take a deep breath. You’re not alone.

Whether it’s a picture from your phone, a vacation photo from a digital camera, or one someone emailed you, editing a photo on your Mac doesn’t have to feel like launching a space shuttle.

Let’s walk through the easiest way to view, crop, adjust, and save a photo—no stress, no jargon, and no Photoshop required.

Step 1: Open the Photo (Hint: You Don’t Need to “Open” an App)

On a Mac, opening a photo is as simple as double-clicking it.
Try this:

  • Go to your Desktop or the Photos folder in Finder.
  • Double-click on any image (a .jpg or .png file, for example).

The photo will likely open in a built-in app called Preview (more on that in a second).
If it doesn’t, right-click the photo and choose:
Open With → Preview

📸 Tip: If your photo is inside the Photos app (instead of your Desktop or Downloads), just open the Photos app from your Dock or Launchpad and click the image you want to work with.

Step 2: Know the App: Preview vs Photos

You can edit photos in two main places on your Mac:

AppBest For…
PreviewQuick edits to files on Desktop or in Finder
PhotosManaging, editing, and organizing your whole photo library

We’ll show you both—but let’s start with Preview, because it’s fast and easy.

Step 3: Quick Edits in Preview

Once your photo is open in Preview, look for a toolkit icon near the top of the window.
Click it to reveal the Markup Toolbar.

Here’s what you can do in seconds:

  • Crop a photo:
    1. Click and drag your mouse to select the area you want to keep.
    2. Then click Tools → Crop (or hit Command + K).
  • Add text or shapes:
Click the “T” for text or the square/circle icon to draw shapes.
  • Rotate or flip:
Use the rotate arrows at the top of the toolbar to turn the image.
  • Adjust size:
Click Tools → Adjust Size to shrink or enlarge the photo.

Don’t worry—you can undo any mistake by clicking Edit → Undo or pressing Command + Z.

Step 4: Smart Edits in the Photos App

If your photo is inside the Photos app (like the ones synced from your iPhone), the editing tools are even easier—and more powerful.

How to Start Editing:

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Double-click on the photo you want.
  3. Click Edit in the top-right corner.

You’ll now see a friendly editing panel with three tabs:

1. Adjust

  • Use simple sliders to make your photo brighter, warmer, or sharper.
  • Try Auto first—it often makes great improvements all by itself.

2. Filters

  • One-click makeovers for your photo: vivid, black and white, warm, cool, and more.

3. Crop

  • Drag the corners or sides to crop your photo.
  • You can also rotate or straighten it with simple sliders.

And don’t worry—your original photo is always preserved. If you don’t like your edits, just click Revert to Original at any time.

Meet Ethel: Cropping a Cat Out of Her Garden

Ethel is 74 and loves her flower garden. One spring morning, she snapped a perfect photo of her tulips—only to realize later that her neighbor’s tabby cat was mid-yawn in the corner of the frame.

When I showed her how to open the photo in Preview, click-and-drag to crop just the tulips, and hit Command + K, she grinned and said:
“I’ve been afraid of editing for nothing. That was easier than opening a jar of jam.”

Ethel now edits all her flower photos. The cat remains unbothered.

Step 5: Save or Share Your Masterpiece

In Preview:

Once you’re happy with the changes:

  • Click File → Save (or Save As to create a new copy)

In Photos:

Changes are saved automatically.
To share:

  • Click the Share icon (a little square with an arrow pointing up)
  • Choose Mail, Messages, or AirDrop

You can even drag the photo onto your Desktop to make a copy there.
