If you have ever opened your Mac to check the date, peek at the forecast, or find a note, only to get lost in windows, Mac desktop widgets are your new best friend. Mac desktop widgets live right on your wallpaper, so you can see your Calendar, Weather, and Notes at a glance without opening apps or hunting for tabs. They are quick, calm, and perfect for everyday productivity. (On a Mac you can add and edit widgets from the desktop or from Notification Center, and even use your iPhone’s widgets when enabled.) What are Mac desktop widgets, in plain language?
Think of a widget as a little window into an app. A Calendar widget shows today’s events, a Weather widget shows the current conditions where you live, and a Notes widget gives you quick access to a note or folder you use often. You can place these on the desktop or in Notification Center, then size and rearrange them any time.
How to add widgets to your Mac desktop
Follow these simple steps. You can do it right now.
- Control-click the desktop, then choose Edit Widgets. The widget browser opens.
Alternative: click the date and time in the menu bar to open Notification Center, then click Edit Widgets at the bottom. - Pick a widget from the sidebar, for example Calendar, Weather, or Notes. Drag it to the desktop. When you let go, it lands where you drop it. Click Done.
- Choose a size if offered, typically Small, Medium, or Large. Smaller fits neatly, larger shows more detail. You can change size later by Control-clicking the widget.
- Arrange and remove any time. Control-click a widget to Remove Widget. In Notification Center you can also hold Option and click the remove button.
Add a Calendar widget
- In Edit Widgets, choose Calendar and drag your preferred style to the desktop.
- Control-click the widget to pick what it shows, for example Up Next or Month view, depending on the style you choose.
Add a Weather widget
- In Edit Widgets, choose Weather and drag.
- If asked, allow location or set a city. Most styles show current conditions and can show an hourly or daily forecast in larger sizes.
Add a Notes widget
- In Edit Widgets, choose Notes and drag.
- Control-click the widget to select a specific note or a folder to display. Clicking the widget opens the note or folder in the Notes app for editing.
How to use your iPhone widgets on the Mac
You do not need the Mac versions of every app. If you use a widget on your iPhone, you can usually use it on your Mac too.
- Open System Settings.
- Click Desktop & Dock, scroll to Widgets.
- Turn on Use iPhone widgets. Now, in the widget browser, you will see a “From iPhone” section with your iPhone’s widgets, ready to drag to the desktop or Notification Center.
Tip: If you recently changed iPhones and do not see the right device, check the Use iPhone widgets menu in Desktop & Dock to confirm the correct phone is selected.
Make widgets easy on the eyes
You can decide how colorful widgets look on the desktop. Some people prefer subtle, others prefer bold color.
- Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Widgets.
- Use the Widget style or Dim widgets on desktop pop-up to choose Automatic, Always monochrome, or Neverdim, which keeps full color. Automatic adjusts color when windows overlap, so widgets stay readable without shouting.
Everyday ways to use Mac desktop widgets
Here are a few gentle, practical ideas that save clicks every day.
- Calendar at a glance. Place a medium Calendar widget near the top-right corner to see today’s schedule without opening Calendar.
- Weather by the window. Put a small Weather widget near the bottom of the screen, and a larger one on busy travel days.
- Notes you use all week. Pin a Notes widget to a folder called “This Week” to keep checklists and reminders close. Click once to jump into the note when it is time to edit.
A short story: Maria’s calmer mornings
Maria used to open her Mac, then lose ten minutes clicking through Calendar, Weather, and Notes before she even started work. We added three Mac desktop widgets: Calendar (Up Next), Weather for her city, and a Notes widget pointing to her “Today” list. Now she glances at the right edge of her screen, sees her first appointment, checks whether she needs an umbrella, and clicks the Notes widget to check off the first task. She says her mornings feel quieter and she starts on time.
Troubleshooting, the friendly way
- Widgets look gray or too faint. In Desktop & Dock > Widgets, change the style so they are not dimmed. Try Never for a burst of color.
- I cannot find Edit Widgets. Control-click the desktop wallpaper itself, not an icon or window. Or open Notification Center by clicking the date and time, then click Edit Widgets.
- Notes does not show the note I want. Control-click the Notes widget and choose a specific note or a folder. Clicking the widget opens Notes so you can edit normally.
- I do not see my iPhone’s widgets. In System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Widgets, turn on Use iPhone widgets and make sure the correct phone is listed.
Quick recap
- Mac desktop widgets put Calendar, Weather, and Notes on your wallpaper for glanceable info.
- Add them by Control-clicking the desktop > Edit Widgets, then drag, size, and arrange.
- Customize color and style in System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Widgets, and turn on Use iPhone widgets if you like.
