Keep the door open

What to say

Help first. Repair and rules still matter.

In our fictional example, Alex has spent game coins on a decoration without asking. Acknowledge the telling before discussing the spending: ‘I’m glad you came to me. Let’s look together.’ Find out what was spent and whether real money was involved; do not assume a refund is available.

For an ordinary family mistake, stop the immediate problem, repair what can be repaired, then discuss the next useful step. You might return spending to adult approval while practising the rule together. Avoid labels such as ‘You can’t be trusted.’ Keep the explanation about this decision.

This approach concerns ordinary mistakes. Serious concerns about a child’s safety need appropriate school or professional safeguarding support, rather than a family exercise. Do not share identifiable experiences in a workshop or through the contact form. In immediate danger, use the relevant local emergency service.
