Healthy habits at home

What to practise

Make stopping a routine you can repeat.

Look at what happens around technology: sleep, schoolwork, time together, offline play and the difficulty of stopping. A single daily total cannot explain every family’s experience.

Agree a recognisable end point before starting. Give a warning that includes ‘no new round’, say what happens next, and choose a home for entertainment devices. A shared charging place may suit your household. Plan around a game’s real stopping points rather than interrupting every match. Some children need visual cues, simpler prompts or a different transition.

Keep communication, accessibility, prescribed health support and school-required functions available. Separate entertainment where possible and consult any relevant existing support plan before changing necessary access. Persistent or distressing sleep difficulties need the child’s usual health professional, not just another device rule.

Decide one small change, practise it for seven days, then review what helped. One good week is a check-in, not proof of lasting readiness.

One question to take away

Choose one conversation, one setting and one habit for the next seven days.

Your next seven days

Choose one action for each theme. Decide together when to try it, then review what helped.
